Theoretical analysis and practical insights on importance sampling in Bayesian networks

چکیده
The AIS-BN algorithm [2] is a successful importance sampling-based algorithm for Bayesian networks that relies on two heuristic methods to obtain an initial importance function: 2-cutoff , replacing small probabilities in the conditional probability tables by a larger 2, and setting the probability distributions of the parents of evidence nodes to uniform. However, why the simple heuristics are so effective was not well understood. In this paper, we point out that it is due to a practical requirement for the importance function, which says that a good importance function should possess thicker tails than the actual posterior probability distribution. By studying the basic assumptions behind importance sampling and the properties of importance sampling in Bayesian networks, we develop several theoretical insights into the desirability of thick tails for importance functions. These insights not only shed light on the success of the two heuristics of AIS-BN, but also provide a common theoretical basis for several other successful heuristic methods.

Modeling and Reasoning with Bayesian Networks
This book provides a thorough introduction to the formal foundations and practical applications of Bayesian networks. It provides an extensive discussion of techniques for building Bayesian networks that model real-world situations, including techniques for synthesizing models from design, learning models from data, and debugging models using sensitivity analysis. It also treats exact and appro...
متن کاملImportance Sampling for Bayesian
Bayesian networks (BNs) offer a compact, intuitive, and efficient graphical representation of uncertain relationships among the variables in a domain and have proven their value in many disciplines over the last two decades. However, two challenges become increasingly critical in practical applications of Bayesian networks. First, real models are reaching the size of hundreds or even thousands ...
متن کاملBayesian Logic Networks and the Search for Samples with Backward Simulation and Abstract Constraint Learning
With Bayesian logic networks (BLNs), we present a practical representation formalism for statistical relational knowledge. Based on the concept of mixed networks with probabilistic and deterministic constraints, BLNs combine the probabilistic semantics of (relational) Bayesian networks with constraints in first-order logic. In practical applications, efficient inference in statistical relationa...
متن کاملEstimation of Products Final Price Using Bayesian Analysis Generalized Poisson Model and Artificial Neural Networks
Estimating the final price of products is of great importance. For manufacturing companies proposing a final price is only possible after the design process over. These companies propose an approximate initial price of the required products to the customers for which some of time and money is required. Here using the existing data of already designed transformers and utilizing the bayesian anal...
متن کاملA Qualitative Investigation of the Role of Family Interactions in the formation of Students’ Resilience
The present study aimed to investigate the role of family interactions in the formation of students’ resilience by adopting the qualitative approach using phenomenology. The population of the study included all male students of junior high schools in Sabzevar, Iran, during the 2021-22 academic year. The participants were selected using the logic of Targeted Sampling and convenience sampling met...
